St. Andrews, home to the Royal and Ancient (est 1754) and the Old Course are the most famous links in the world. Much more than an 18-hole acid test of golf the course presents a stage, an inimitable golfing experience and a walk through time and history.
St Andrews main defences (apart from the north and west wind) are the deep sod-lined bunkers, most of them with their own cherished names, some hidden and only big enough to accommodate an irate golfer wielding a sand wedge. With descriptive names such as "Hell", "Coffin" and "Grave" they linger in a golfer's mind long after experiencing their unwanted hospitality.
The Swilken burn snakes across the 1st and 18th holes to await a duffed or errant approach. The ancient Swilken Bridge is a historic crossing point down the 18th towards the home stretch. Over the bridge the 'greats' of golfing history have trod, from Old Tom Morris and Bobby Jones to Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and other champions past and present. In the distance the R&A Club House and the red stone edifice of Hamilton Hall rise behind the 18th green over the Valley of Sin to look out and welcome golfers home.
