For visual splendour and a golfing treat, the West Links golf course in North Berwick, East Lothian is wonderful.
Because of its spectacular views over the Firth of Forth and the quality of its links, North Berwick has attracted a worldwide reputation and generations of golfers to its shores. The layout of the course is traditional 9 holes out to the west and 9 back, taking in breathtaking views of the Bass Rock, Fidra and the Kingdom of Fife.
The course possess some of the most notable holes in golf, particularly the 14th "Perfection" with the sea seemingly lapping too close for comfort next to the green and the short 15th ("Redan"), uphill and bunkered - both holes copied and recreated at the National Golf Links of America.
The second hole ("Sea"), 431 yards long is a slight dog-leg right drive where an errant slice will inevitably mean playing form the sand, sea or rock pools back up onto the fairway. To the left, the Edwardian charm of the Marine Hotel presides over the undulating links as they unfold to the west with Fidra guarding the passage along the Firth of Forth.
